This page is about my favourite wast of time : watching Nature in mainly in Europe
As everybody who starts to learn about nature, I started with
birds. They are moving animals and easy to see and already
present near your home. After some time this was not enough and I
started to observe plants. The main disadvantage of plants is
that they can only observed in summertime. Well, the top of my
botanist life was the discovery of Falcaria vulgaris,
Sikkelscherm in Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands close to
the Belgium border. It was more or less - at least, it was the
first accepted observation- a new species for Holland. After this
I also spend time on fungi but this was really hard and though.
One can only study mushrooms one quarter of a year so it is tough
to keep your knowledge. More succesfull were my ways watching
insects : Dragonflies (Odonata),
Butterflies (Rhopalocera and Heterocera, together Lepidoptera)
and Grasshoppers (Orthoptera). Currently I am spending too
much time on Charophytes or Skunkweed (Characeae).
What is Skunkweed ?
Characeae are well developed green algae which are
easily recognised. Often Characeae can be found in clear
and oligo- or mesotrophic waters which contain Chara
dominated plant communities or Potametea communities. Characeae
communities are present all over the world and are sensitive
for water pollution. So Characeae can be used for
monitoring water quality. Stoneworts are highly developed algae
which are commonly known as indicators of clear and nutrient-poor
water. Most species are pioneers and occur only in a specific
stage of development from a newly formed vegetationless water
until a well-balanced and stable ecosystem.
In English Charophytes are called Stonewort because of lime which is on most Characea, especially in calcareous conditions. In Germany the name is chandelier algae (Armleuchteralgen) because the structure is like an chandelier.
Well, that is all I am going to say about my self right know. If you want to leave a message you can do it in the guestbook !
Have a nice time !!!
